The MCU is ready for Phase 4, as Kevin Feige has announced that Marvel Studios already has 20 films lined up after the fourth Avengers instalment.

There are still five films to go before Phase 3 wraps, but the studio are already looking to the future – and they are showing no sign of slowing down as they enter their 10th year of movie-making. However, as we move ever-closer to the end of the Marvel Cinematic Universe as we know it, the birth of something new is upon us.

Speaking to Vanity Fair in the coverage released yesterday, Feige shared that Marvel Studios already has a good idea of where the MCU is going in the years to come, with 20 more films already in development. And given that they have already made roughly the same amount of films to date, it’s safe to assume that the upcoming projects will cover the next decade of storytelling.

Feige stated:

“22 movies in, and we’ve got another 20 movies on the docket that are completely different from anything that’s come before—intentionally.”

It isn’t just the number of projects that’s impressive, but also the fact that Feige states that they will be “completely different from anything that’s come before.” While there’s no specifics as to what he could mean by this, Marvel are probably looking to shake things up to avoid ‘superhero fatigue’, where the stories become a little too formulaic and predictable for audiences. Hopefully this will take us out of our collective comfort zone, and inject some more excitement into the franchise.

Another point to consider is the possibility that Marvel Studios will be able to win back the characters which are currently at home with Fox and Sony. Despite the sales talk between Disney and Fox apparently being stalled, we know that Feige is eager to get his hands back on the X-Men and Fantastic Four, and should this merger go ahead in the future, it will be interesting to see how these heroes fit in to the bigger picture of the MCU.

At the moment, however, we can only speculate on the future of the MCU (as they are giving nothing away) and be a little depressed that there’s no world in which are future is as organised as the MCU.
