“If you want to be King, you have to kill the King.”
From the mind of SNL alum Taran Killam (in his directorial debut) comes Killing Gunther – a new action/comedy in the form of a mockumentary, that sees Blake (Killam) put together a team of eccentric assassins to kill the world’s best hitman – Gunther (Schwarzenegger).
Blake’s team comes in the form of explosives expert Donnie (fellow SNL cast member Bobby Moynihan), sniper Sanaa Fairouza (New Girl’s Hannah Simone), ex-militant/cyborg Izzat (Fresh Off the Boat’s Amir Talai) and twin Russian assassins Mia (Fargo’s Allison Tolman) and Barold (Mascots‘ Ryan Gaul), who bring their own unique skills to the mission, though it seems that all their skills amount to nothing against Gunther, who appears to be one step ahead every time they make a move.
Schwarzenegger seems in his element alongside these young comedic actors, in what seems to be one of his most entertaining roles in a long time, as he openly mocks his action movie roots with easy humour and crowd-pleasing eccentricities that make Gunther the unstoppable maniac he is, while Taran Killam gets increasingly more exasperated in the face of the seemingly invincible hitman, repeating over and over like the Regina George of hitmen: “I’m going to kill him.”
Of course it wouldn’t be a Schwarzenegger film without a Terminator joke, as Gunther goes with the throwaway comment to camera: “They’re going to get terminated – that I can tell you.”
Killing Gunther is yet to have a day of release, but is set for release this year.
