Female-driven films are on the rise, especially due to the enormous success of Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman. And Logan’s director, James Mangold, thinks a solo X-23 film could be the next big hit.
An X-23 spinoff isn’t officially in the works, but in a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Logan director James Mangold cited the success of Wonder Woman as a potential gateway for young newcomer Dafne Keen to have her own film:
“Patty [Jenkins’] success with [Wonder Woman] only solidifies more for studios that there’s less to fear with a female protagonist. The more that keeps getting hit home, that ends up giving me more space turning around and going, ‘Well here we are with a female protagonist. That’s incredible. And what are we going to do with her?’ And that’s where we are with that [the Laura script] right now, dreaming.”
As Mangold states, the X-23 spinoff is nothing more than a dream right now, in the very, very early stages of development. However, a film based around Keen’s Wolverine clone would make sense, as Hugh Jackman has done incredible things with the X-Men franchise, and 20th Century Fox is rightly hesitant to recast their most popular mutant any time soon – doing Laura’s story would be a great way to bridge the gap.
For now, Fox have a lot of mutant movies on their plate, with such films as Deadpool 2, New Mutants, and X-Men: Dark Phoenix all arriving next year, with X-Force, and Gambit following close behind.
