There’s more mystery to come
Universal and filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan are set to build on their success following the release of Glass, with two untitled thrillers set for release on February 26th, 2021, and February 17th, 2023.
The director independently financed his last three films with the studio – The Visit, Split and Glass – with a combined production budget of $35M. They went on to collectively generate $625M worldwide.
Universal Pictures President, Peter Cramer, said in a statement “M. Night Shyamalan continues to create exciting, highly original stories that keep global audiences on the edge of their seats. There is no one like him. He is a master filmmaker working at the height of his powers, and we are honored [sic] that he has once again chosen Universal to be the home for his next two incredible projects.”
Shyamalan himself said of the deal, “There are wonderful studios out there, but Universal has made it a mandate to release original films. They are the best at finding an audience for new stories with unexpected tones. I believe original films are crucial to the longevity of the theatrical experience. I am so excited to be working with them again and bringing new stories to the movie screen for years to come.”
For the Shyamalan fans out there, you won’t have to wait until then for more of his work, as his 10-episode half-hour psychological thriller series Servant will debut on the upcoming streaming service AppleTV+.
