A new trailer for The Umbrella Academy proves that, despite their Marvel cuts, Netflix is still very much in the superhero business as they tackle the eccentric Dark Horse Comics saga from the mind of My Chemical Romance frontman Gerard Way.
Way worked with Brazilian artist Gabriel Bá to create to create The Umbrella Academy which was first released back in 2007. A surreal mix of Uncanny X-Men, Doom Patrol, and Wes Anderson-style outsiders, the series was an immediate hit with comic fans.
The graphic novel was released at a time when Hollywood names were beginning to become more involved in the Comic Con scene, however, Way earned his place as well as an Eisner Award (the highest accolade given in the comics industry) and strong acceptance from his peers. Now the musician is bringing the series to life, but still keeping his tied to music as his exclusive cover of Simon & Garfunkel’s “Hazy Shade of Winter” plays on the new trailer below:
The series cast includes Ellen Page, Mary J. Blige, Cameron Britton, Tom Hopper, David Castañeda, Emmy Raver-Lampman, Robert Sheehan, Aidan Gallagher, Colm Feore, Adam Godley, John Magaro, Ashley Madekwe and Kate Walsh.
Netflix’s official synopsis for The Umbrella Academy reads: “On the same day in 1989, forty-three infants are inexplicably born to random, unconnected women who showed no signs of pregnancy the day before. Seven are adopted by a billionaire who creates The Umbrella Academy and prepares his “children” to save the world. Now, the six surviving members reunite upon the news of their father’s passing and must work together to solve a mystery surrounding his death. But the estranged family begins to come apart due to their divergent personalities and abilities, not to mention the imminent threat of a global apocalypse.”
Season 1 of The Umbrella Academy will have a run of 10 one-hour episodes, debuting on February 15th.
