Following the release of the Xbox One S and the announcement of the Scorpio, it has been hard not to notice that the Kinect has been out of the picture for some time. For the many or few who cared enough to wonder whether the device was still being supported, Microsoft has finally announced that its production is coming to an end. According to a report by Fast Co Design, the company will stop manufacturing the Kinect after selling over 35 million units since it originally launched. This news comes after the device’s long and gruelling history in the market, which partly contributed to the perception of new consumer technology being simply considered as gimmicks.
During its initial reveal back in 2009, the Kinect was touted as the next and biggest revolution to the way we played our games. Carrying a number of features that emphasized on wireless motion control, highly responsive camera, and the ability to communicate with your Xbox 360, it was hard not to look forward to what this device was truly capable of. While the Kinect was received well by critics upon its initial release, a series of broken promises, mediocre game support, and realization that not everyone could accommodate the device, eventually turned consumer excitement to disappointment and disdain.
It also didn’t help that the company had initially planned for the device to be a required and permanent peripheral to their then upcoming Xbox-One, to which many critics had expressed concerns about due to the possibility of being used as surveillance cameras. Microsoft eventually backed down on these plans, making the Kinect an optional addition their next-gen console, which also helped it compete against Sony’s PlayStation in terms of pricing.
Those who currently own a Kinect shouldn’t fret too much however, as it appears that the company is set to continue its support indefinitely. Development of compatible video games however remain uncertain as the company is looking to keep their focus on the current market as well as many of their upcoming projects.
