Sources have revealed to Variety that Whiplash star Miles Teller has been cast in the Top Gun sequel, Top Gun: Maverick, as the son of Tom Cruise’s late co-pilot, Goose.
Last week, rumours circulated that Cruise tested with Teller along with Glen Powell and Nicholas Hoult for the role.
Unsurprisingly, given the title, Tom Cruise’s Maverick will be a bigger focus in the sequel, and when fans of the original are reintroduced to the character, they will see a very different version of Maverick, who has now transitioned to being a mentor to the newest generation of hot shots.
As well as Cruise reprising his role, Val Kilmer is also set to return as Tom “Iceman” Kazansky. We know from character breakdowns that there will be a new love interest for Maverick, so it will be interesting to see who will fill that role – and how much younger than Cruise she will be – we’re guessing at least 12 years.
Top Gun: Maverick is slated for release on July 12th, 2019.
