The network has now reclassified as a ‘Limited Series’.
Hot off their win for Best New Series at the WGA Awards earlier this month, HBO’s Watchmen may actually be returning for more seasons, as the network has reclassified the series as they move forward.
The WarnerMedia-owned network said in a statement, “We discussed with the producers and felt limited series was the most accurate representation of the show and any possible future instalments.”
This doesn’t come as a huge surprise, given that after the success of Game of Thrones, they were all set on doing a seemingly infinite amount of spinoffs with the property. With all the positive attention that Watchmen has received, HBO weren’t likely to just be happy with a single season.
Damon Lindelof, who was behind this latest adaptation of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ iconic graphic novel, has already said that while he envisioned his story as a self-contained one, he would be open to doing more if there was the right story to tell. However, more recently, he’s hinted at the show perhaps becoming more of an anthology series, like American Horror Story or Fargo.
Deadline has heard that the situation remains very fluid, which is why the HBO statement about the reclassification wasn’t hugely specific about the show’s future.
So, we may or may not be taking another trip into HBO’s Watchmen world, it all remains to be seen. Stay tuned.
