It’s safe to say that we’ve reached a time Hollywood either has, is or is going to release sequels to pretty much every single film you’ve ever loved. And one that has come under particular scrutiny from fans of the original is the forthcoming Blade Runner 2049, set for release next year. And, after a long time waiting, we’ve finally got our first teaser.
Just under two minutes long, we don’t get an awful lot of the story, (which isn’t a surprise given that 99% of the cast are yet to have their part listed on IMDb) but we do get a sense of where this film will be taking us. As atmospheric and beautifully cinematic as its predecessor, this teaser reintroduces us to Ford’s Rick Deckard, some thirty years after the original film, through his voiceover – “Replicants, like any other machine, are either a benefit or a hazard…”
However, it becomes clear that the figure we follow is not in fact Deckard, but an LAPD ‘Blade Runner’ known only as ‘K’ (Ryan Gosling). The two come face to face in an exchange that cements their roles as predator and prey:
“I did your job once. I was good at it.”
“Things were simpler then.”
And in just over a dozen words, they completely captured my interest. I am, as we all should, reserve judgement until we see more – but, so far, so good.
