According to a new report, Resident Evil is heading to television as Netflix is developing a scripted series based on the horror franchise.
Deadline was first to break the news, explaining that it will be a Netflix global original from German production and distribution company Constantin Film who are behind the Resident Evil film series based on the Capcom video game series. A search is underway for a showrunner to work on the adaptation.
While Deadline weren’t able to get comments from anyone at Netflix, they have heard that the plan for the series is to expand the Resident Evil universe, deepening the existing mythology. It will keep the same basic premise as the film franchise, however, the drama will also explore the dark inner workings of the Umbrella Corporation and the outbreak’s new world order.
The film franchise launched in 2002, and to date consists of six films that have cumulatively earned around $1.2 billion worldwide, making it the highest-grossing film series that is based on a video game.
