Streaming giant Netflix has greenlit Shadow and Bone, an eight-episode series based on Leigh Bardugo’s Grishaverse novels, Shadow and Bone and Six of Crows.
Deadline has revealed that he series is coming from Eric Heisser, writer of recent Netflix hit, Bird Box, and Shawn Levy the executive producer on megahit Stranger Things. Bardugo will also serve as an executive producer alongside Levy, Pouya Shahbazian, Dan Levine, Dan Cohen and Josh Barry.
Created, written, and executive produced by Heisserer, who will also act as showrunner, Shadow and Bone will bring together the characters and stories of both the Shadow and Bone and Six of Crows book series, both of which take place in Bardugo’s Grishaverse. The former explores the life of Alina Starkov, an orphan in the Russia-inspired land of Ravka, who discovers a power she never knew she had in order to save her best friend. The latter is a kind of fantasy Ocean’s 11, which sees a gang of teenage misfits endeavor to pull off an incredible heist.
As someone who is a massive fan of the books, I’m not entirely sure how the stories will cross over, as apart from taking place in the same world, the two series don’t really intersect. But, with Bardugo on board, the series will hopefully be crafted in a way which explores both stories in a faithful fashion.
