Netflix’s upcoming reboot of Sabrina the Teenage Witch has cast a key character in the young witch’s story.

Lucy Davis (Wonder Woman) will play Hilda Spellman – played by Caroline Rhea in the 1996 version – opposite lead Kiernan Shipka, in the Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa show from Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros. TV.

Based on Archie Comics’ characters, the series will reimagine the origin and adventures of Sabrina the Teenage Witch, as a darker coming-of-age story, which deals in themes of horror, the occult, and obviously, witchcraft. This adaptation will see the young witch wrestling with her dual nature (half-witch, half-mortal) while dark forces threaten her, her family, and the daylight world.

Davis will be playing one of Sabrina’s aunts who play a large role in the story. The more nurturing of the two, Hilda’s humour and motherly nature oppose her wicked streak, something which Davis portrayed well in her role of Etta in last year’s Wonder Woman. As for Hilda’s brewing abilities, she’s just as adept at spite jars as she is at love potions, effecting her family’s enemies and the Baxter High students alike.

With the news of this casting, surely it won’t be long until we find out who will be playing Zelda Spellman.
