Since it was announced that Ex Machina star Alicia Vikander was cast as Lara Croft in the upcoming Tomb Raider adaptation, audiences have been eager to get a look at the actress in action. And thanks to an Empire exclusive, we have a new look at Vikander in the role of the iconic video game character.
As we can see in the image, this iteration of Lara Croft promises to be a far cry from the 2001 Angelina Jolie feature. Actress Vikander recalls the discussions had in early production meetings about this new incarnation of the character:
“We asked, ‘What are the famous traits of this person? How can we demonstrate them in the story, but make her feel like a young woman in 2018?’”
This Tomb Raider will essentially be a prequel that sees Croft working as a cycle courier in London, finding herself on a quest – not to find a precious artefact – but to seek her missing father.
Norwegian filmmaker Roar Uthaug is directing the reboot, which will also star Walton Goggins, Daniel Wu, and Dominic West.
Tomb Raider is set to arrive in cinemas March 2018.
