Following the success of Wonder Woman, the long-gestating Red Sonja remake is back on track.
Deadline reports that The Expendables’ producer Millennium Media will produce the project, which is set to start a new franchise. Currently, the film is being fast-tracked, and a writer will be hired soon.
Millennium’s Avi Lerner and Joe Gatta – as well as Cinelou’s Mark Canton and Courtney Soloman – are producing the movie. Luke Lieberman, the current rights holder of Red Sonja, will be on board as an executive producer.
“We have been waiting for the right time for this remake and with the success of Wonder Woman, the audience has spoken,” Lerner explained, “They want female heroes.”
Previously, Red Sonja was brought to the big screen in 1985 in a movie starring Brigitte Nielsen and Arnold Schwarzenegger. The character also appeared on the live-action Conan TV series. Red Sonja has also been popular in comicbooks, starting in the 1970s with Marvel Comics, and then a more modern run coming from Dynamite Entertainment.
The new film will differ from the 1985 version, featuring a new story, and a new set of characters within it. In early 2015, Christopher Cosmos was hired to write the screenplay, however this no longer seems to be the case.
