Miles Morales’ heroic journey begins in the new trailer for Sony’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.
In studio is in the process of expanding the Spider-Man brand on the big screen, after having agreed to share the rights to the friendly neighbourhood hero with Marvel Studios, and in addition to more films with Tom Holland in the titular role, Sony is also working on a series of antihero films, starting with Venom, starring Tom Hardy.
On top of these projects, Ultimate Spider-Man, Miles Morales will be making his big screen debut soon (though unfortunately not in live-action form), in Into the Spider-Verse. The film’s teaser made a splash with fans when it debuted last year, largely due to the unique comic-style animation and stylised action. Fans were even more impressed when they found out about the creative team behind the project which included directors Peter Ramsey (Rise of the Guardians), Rodney Rothman (22 Jump Street) and Bob Persichetti (The Little Prince), as well as Chris Lord (The LEGO Movie).
The full-length trailer for Into the Spider-Verse dives deeper into the film’s story, showing how Miles (Shameik Moore) and Peter Parker (Jake Johnson) meet, and how the latter becomes the former’s mentor. Classic Spider-Man villains like Kingpin also make brief appearances in the trailer, however it mostly focuses on the dynamic between the heroes, rather than the villains. The end of the trailer brings with it the revelation that Gwen Stacy is Spider-Gwen within the Spider-Verse, voiced by Hailee Steinfeld.
Whether the live-action Spider-Man universe is able live up to the hype remains to be seen, but it seems that the studio is on to a good thing with their animated heroes.
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is slated for release on December 14th.
