The YA vibes are strong
Despite The Walking Dead taking place in a zombie apocalypse, there seems to be an awful lot of survivors thriving, as the franchise is introducing us to a new generation in a brand-new series – which still doesn’t actually have a name.
Following a group of well-dressed, clean teens – obviously this bunch has a pretty good water supply – the trailer has a distinctly YA feel to it. While outside the walls of their compound the world is still very much that of The Walking Dead, with some excellent zombie effects, the inner workings of the compound promises a different tone than we’ve experienced in the past two TWD series.
The new instalment, set a decade after the start of the apocalypse, is the first to follow the generation who have come of age in the zombie apocalypse, so basically a series of Judiths and Carls. We will follow these characters as they choose who or what they will become – hero or villain, fighter or zombie chow.
It’s clear that AMC has huge plans for their horror hit, with a third TV series in the franchise, upcoming films which will return Andrew Lincoln to his role of Rick Grimes, and even novels that will see the apocalypse go international. However, if they want these endeavours to succeed, they will have to come up with something a little more exciting than the same old storylines that have become stale in their flagship series.
The series’ official synopsis reads: “The third instalment of the franchise will feature two young female protagonists and focus on the first generation to come-of-age in the apocalypse as we know it. Some will become heroes. Some will become villains. In the end, all of them will be changed forever. Grown-up and cemented in their identities, both good and bad. Produced and distributed by AMC Studios, the series will premiere on AMC in spring 2020.”
