Fox Searchlight has today released the first trailer for Tolkien, the biopic of Middle-Earth creator J.R.R. Tolkien, starring Nicholas Hoult.

The film will follow the writer’s early life, and, as a description reads “the formative years of the orphaned author as he finds friendship, love and artistic inspiration among a fellow group of outcasts at school. This takes him into the outbreak of World War I, which threatens to tear the ‘fellowship’ apart. All of these experiences would inspire Tolkien to write his famous Middle-Earth novels.”

Tolkien is directed by Dome Karukoski, from a script by David Gleeson and Stephen Beresford, and also stars Lily Collins as Tolkien’s wife Edith, Anthony Boyle, Colm Meaney, Patrick Gibson, Craig Roberts, Tom Glynn-Carney, Laura Donnelly, Pam Ferris, Derek Jacobi, and Genevieve O’Reilly.

Tolkien is set to hit cinemas on May 1st.
