According to the NPD Group, which tracks video game sales in the United States, Nintendo Switch was the best selling console in the 5 – week period of December. 1.5 million consoles were purchased bringing the lifetime sales to an impressive 4.8 million units sold.
Nintendo’s other console, the Nintendo 3DS also celebrated record sales with December 2017 being the best sales month since December 2014. Collectively, the different versions of Nintendo 3DS hardware sold more than 750,000 units in the U.S. in December, a 27 percent increase over the same period a year ago. The sales also pushed the Nintendo 3DS family of systems to a new milestone of more than 21 million sold in the U.S.
Four Nintendo titles also finished high in the December charts with Mario Odyssey (no.3), Zelda (no.9), Mario Kart (no.4) and Splatoon (no.16) all selling healthily. Additionally, Pokémon Ultra Sun and Pokémon Ultra Moon for Nintendo 3DS finished No. 13 and No. 14, respectively.
While Nintendo Switch clearly came out on top, both PS4 and Xbox One enjoyed strong sales too. Combined console sales saw an 11 percent growth over the previous year. More interesting to point out is the fact that Xbox One outsold PS4. This is no doubt due to the release of Microsoft‘s premium Xbox One X console. Microsoft don’t release sales figures but still good news as up to this point PS4 is said to be outselling Xbox two to one, with 73.6 million units sold so far.
Speaking on this overall increase in console sales, NPD analyst Mat Piscatella said. “Over the first 50 months in market for each console, the combined hardware installed base of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One now exceeds that of the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 by 18 percent, and that of the PlayStation 2 and Xbox by 4 percent.”
