A new teaser for the forthcoming Ocean’s 8 has been released, at it seems that the film is killing off its original namesake, George Clooney’s Danny Ocean.
The remake of the 1960s Rat Pack film, that starred Frank Sinatra and friends, was a blockbusting hit when it was released back in 2001. Starring many of Hollywood’s A-List, including Clooney, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon and Julia Roberts, the Las Vegas heist film spawned two sequels, though neither lived up to the reputation of the first.
Rumours of the predominantly female reboot floated around for a while, though it wasn’t until last year that the film was finally announced. Set in New York City, Sandra Bullock will play Danny Ocean’s sister (who hasn’t been mentioned before now) following in her brother’s footsteps as a heist coordinator. Many have questioned who from the Clooney trio will return for this feature – save Matt Damon and Carl Reiner, who have already been confirmed – but this latest tease for Ocean’s 8 seems to settle the question of the main man.
The teaser has been released ahead of a full trailer that will come later this week, and while many of the shots appear for less than a second in this 15-second clip, in one of them we see Bullock’s Debbie Ocean in front of what appears to be a memorial plaque for Danny, indicating that Clooney’s character has died at some point between Ocean’s Thirteen and the present.
We don’t know much about the new film, other than stars Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Helena Bonham Carter, Rihanna, Mindy Kaling, Sarah Paulson, and Awkwafina make up the titular ‘8’ in a heist that takes place during New York’s Met Gala.
If the clip is anything to go by, director Gary Ross is filming with a similar style and energy to that of Steven Soderbergh’s trilogy – though we’re still reserving our judgement until the film’s release next summer.
