Each season of hit series The Crown is set to cover around a decade of the Queen’s life, so it no surprise that Season 3 is bringing with it a round of recasting – and it seems the lead role will be passed from Claire Foy to Broadchurch star, Olivia Colman.

Entertainment Weekly broke the news ahead of Season 2 hitting Netflix on December 8th. The streaming service’s head, Ted Sarandos previously revealed that the plan was to do six seasons of the series, but at this point it’s unclear whether Colman will play the Queen throughout the remaining series (with the aid of make-up) or whether the final seasons will see another actress take over.

Speaking on the role, Colman said: “I’m so thrilled to be part of The Crown. I was utterly gripped watching it. I think Claire Foy is an absolute genius – she’s an incredibly hard act to follow. I’m basically going to re-watch every episode and copy her.”

Current Queen, Claire Foy, also had a message of support for the actress: “I just love her, I admire her so much and the idea that we sort of will be doing the same job but not actually working together is just enough – I’m honoured by that.”

No news yet on who will take over the other roles.
