It will be all hands on deck when Thanos arrives in Avengers: Infinity War, and this might mean that Pepper Potts will regain her Extremis-based powers from Iron Man 3.
Having already gone on quite a journey in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, from Tony Stark’s assistant to CEO of Stark Industries, Pepper has always been an integral part of Tony’s story, as her character is in the comicbooks. Though she’s been missing from many of the recent films, with her and Tony “taking a break” in Captain America: Civil War, Pepper Potts will soon return to the big screen.
Gwyneth Paltrow did make a brief return to the MCU in Spider-Man: Homecoming, her appearance did cement the fact that Tony and Pepper have rekindled their relationship. And with Tony’s teammates having gone their separate ways since Civil War, he’ll need all the allies he can get, and it seems that Pepper may be able to bring powers of her own to the table.
The climax of Iron Man 3 saw Pepper gain a wide range of abilities thanks to the Extremis virus which Guy Pearce’s Aldrich Killian injected her with. This allowed for a rare switch in roles, where Pepper was able to swoop in and save Tony in true superhero fashion. While the film’s ending implied that she had been cured of the virus, could we see the powers return somehow?
Stephen Colbert asked Gwyneth Paltrow for her thoughts when she appeared on The Late Show:
Colbert: “Is there any chance, at any point, when you were working on the movie, did you thrust your hand toward someone wearing a blue suit with ping pong balls on it?”
Colbert: “Then you still have powers.”
This isn’t exactly a confirmation of Pepper having powers, but it is intriguing to learn that Paltrow was doing motion capture work. The actress has previously teased her own Iron Man suit for Avengers 4, with a shot of her in a motion capture suit, so it does make sense that she would say this. In the comics, Pepper has worn armour of her own, however in the MCU her time in the suit was very short-lived – although with Tony’s concerns for the safety of others on the rise, why not give Pepper a suit?
Powers or not, it will be interesting to see Pepper return to the fold, and with Thanos looking to end the heroes, they could use the extra help.
