And it’s not who we all expected.
Filming on The Batman is officially underway, and with that announcement has come the revealed of Peter Sarsgaard’s thus-far secret role.
Following director Matt Reeves’ tweet announcing Sarsgaard’s casting, most people believed that he had been cast in the role of Harvey Dent/Two-Face, however the official cast listing has him down as Gotham City District Attorney Gil Colson.
This character has no known origin in the DC Comics Universe, however this doesn’t necessarily mean that the actor couldn’t be playing Two-Face. It could be that Reeves has merely changed the name, as he did when announcing Paul Dano as The Riddler. Dano’s character is Edward Nashton, rather than Edward Nygma as he is in the comic book universe – and after all, Harvey Dent is also Gotham City’s District Attorney in comic book canon, so Reeves may simply be trying to keep some mystery alive in the story.
The Batman sees Robert Pattinson suit up as The Dark Knight, in Bruce Wayne’s early days as the hero. As well as Pattinson, Sarsgaard, and Dano the cast also includes Zoë Kravitz as Selina Kyle/Catwoman, Jeffrey Wright as James Gordon, John Turturro as Carmine Falcone, Jayme Lawson as mayoral candidate Bella Reál, Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, and Colin Farrell as Oswald Cobblepot/The Penguin.
Reeves previously described the film as a venture into Batman’s detective nature, “It’s very much a point of view-driven, noir Batman tale. It’s told very squarely on his shoulders, and I hope it’s going to be a story that will be thrilling but also emotional. It’s more Batman in his detective mode than we’ve seen in the films. The comics have a history of that.”
As well as this, Colin Farrell also recently praised the film’s script for being dark, beautiful and moving.
The Batman is set for release on June 26th, 2021.
