In news that I’m sure will shock absolutely no-one, the unstoppable behemoth that is PUBG (PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds) has reached 3 Million concurrent players on Steam.
The game recently made its way over to Xbox One, with 1 Million Players currently clocked, and also started rolling out its brand new Desert map. PUBG is also set to leave Early Access on December 20.
PlayerUnknown himself recently appeared on BBC Newsbeat for an interview about the game, revealing his concerns about copycat games aping its formula. Since its release there has been an emergence of Battle Royale games and game modes including GTA, Fortnite and even Dying Light. Speaking on this issue Greene stated; “I want other developers to put their own spin on the genre… not just lift things from our game,” he said. “I want this genre of games to grow. For that to happen you need new and interesting spins on the game mode. If it’s just copycats down the line, then the genre doesn’t grow and people get bored.”
We will have to wait and see if Greene’s claims hold any lasting affect as currently there are very few laws protecting gameplay design. Stay tuned to see if PUBG takes any of our Game of the Year wins when it goes live early next week. Check out the Xbox One launch trailer below.
