Lucasfilm has announced today that The Last Jedi’s director, Rian Johnson is set to create a brand-new Star Wars trilogy, the first of which he is said to be writing and directing, with long-time collaborator Ram Bergman as producer.
As writer and director of The Last Jedi, Johnson is said to have created a ‘powerful’ film which both Lucasfilm and Disney are immensely proud of. Shepherding in this brand new trilogy (which will exist separately from the episodic Skywalker saga) Johnson will be introducing new characters, from a corner of the galaxy which Star Wars lore has never yet explored.
Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm, stated: “We all loved working with Rian on The Last Jedi. He’s a creative force, and watching him craft The Last Jedi from start to finish was one of the great joys of my career. Rian will do amazing things with the blank canvas of this new trilogy.”
“We had the time of our lives collaborating with Lucasfilm and Disney on The Last Jedi. Star Wars is the greatest modern mythology and we feel very lucky to have contributed to it. We can’t wait to continue with this new series of films,” Johnson and Bergman said in a joint statement.
Not only does this news spark excitement for Star Wars fans, but it also shows that Lucasfilm has a lot of faith in Johnson, and must have seen something incredible in The Last Jedi to prompt them to make this decision.
We’ll soon be able to see just what has got Lucasfilm so excited when The Last Jedi is released on December 14th in the UK and December 15th in the US.
