Another day, another reboot or remake or re-imagining of a classic movie franchise.
This time it’s the turn of Shane Black and Richard Donner’s Lethal Weapon series that gets the big budget television treatment. But it’s not Mel Gibson and Danny Glover who assume the parts they are best known for here. Stalwarts of TV and film Jordana Brewster and Kevin Rahm join Damon Wayans and Clayne Crawford in what appears to be an adaptation of the movies about Martin Riggs, unhinged cop, who is paired with by-the-book detective Roger Murtaugh, a partnership which is made difficult due to Riggs’ devil-may-care way of life and Roger trying to live a stress-free existence in his older years – to little avail. Of course there is a strong reason as why Riggs behaves so aggressively and this is what ultimately brings the two very polar men together in the end.
Will this show do right where the Rush Hour series did so very wrong? It’s another buddy cop show with a police procedural story in a sea of programmes swimming with buddy cops, comedy, and procedure (that’s likely going to be thrown out the window due to the way Riggs’ does things). Just because it has a big budget, explosions, and maybe a few hot bodies floating around doesn’t automatically mean it’s going to be a success. It will always come down to character performances and the dynamic they share in situations on the streets and at home.
Admittedly, this show could be a lot of fun if executed right and is not just another quip-a-minute action ride. Wayans is a talented actor and relative unknown (but has quite a few credits to his name) Clayne Crawford is haggard enough to be the new Riggs (seeing how Gibson is now a nut-bar).
There’s no release date for the pilot but when it does we will let you all know.
