Robert De Niro is in talks to join Warner Bros’ Joker, starring Joaquin Phoenix, and directed/co-written by Todd Phillips.
The film will play out as something of an origin story, which has been described as a gritty character study of the iconic Batman villain, whilst also being labelled as a broader cautionary tale of a man, disregarded by society, who becomes the ultimate supervillain.
Talks with De Niro have been going on for weeks now, but it is now being said that the studio is nearing a deal with the actor, finally having worked out the financial side. Sources have said that should De Niro sign on to the project, he will be playing a talk show host, who’s a formative figure in the development of the character who eventually becomes The Joker – though this will not be an antagonistic role.
Joker is set for release on October 4th, 2019.
