Samuel L. Jackson has revealed to fans that the upcoming Captain Marvel movie will see super-spy Nick Fury before he was in need of his iconic eyepatch.
Jackson told AVClub: “We’re going back now, and I meet Captain Marvel in more of an origin story. You’ll see Nick Fury with another guy’s face, somebody that’s got two eyes, so that’s a whole big deal. You’ll see. It’s prior to the eye injury, no eye patch.”
Captain America: The Winter Soldier gave us our first hint at Fury’s life with both eyes, as he explained that he lost his eye as a result of misplaced trust, perhaps at the hand of Robert Redford’s Alexander Pierce.
Last July finally saw confirmation of Jackson’s appearance in 2019’s Captain Marvel, which had been up in the air for a while. The actor hasn’t appeared in a Marvel movie since 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron, where he appeared in a cameo to help out the troubled heroes escape.
Little is known about Captain Marvel thus far, though we do know that it will be set in the 1990s, and will see the introduction of the shape-shifting Skrulls into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The hints we have seen at Fury’s past, as well as the inclusion of a race who can change their appearance has led many fans to speculate that the film could show Fury lose his eye.
The loss of the eyepatch is certainly something Jackson is happy with, as he explained how wearing it impacted his ability to read lines on set:
“It’ll be easier to learn my lines. It’s one of those weird kind of things. The first day I shot as Nick Fury with one eye, I couldn’t remember my lines. I was tired since we were coming from somewhere, so I thought it was fatigue. Then I realized I had learned my lines with two eyes. So, I had to start blocking my eye to learn my lines. It’s a stupid kind of thing, but it totally worked.”
Captain Marvel is set for release on March 8th, 2019.
