20th Century Fox released a new trailer for their film adaptation based on the Manga GUNNM by Yukito Kishiro, Alita: Battle Angel, at SDCC.
Kishiro welcomed the audience, who were winners of a special scavenger hunt, to the event and expressed his excitement for the project via video before the panel began. He praised dilmmakers Robert Rodriguez and Jon Landau for their vision of his creation.
The directors were joined by actors Rosa Salazar and Keean Johnson, after they shared around 18 minutes of exclusive footage with the audience. The incredible CG action and effects that have been used in the feature make the film seem like real-life Manga. As Rodriguez describes it, the effects (particularly of the central heroine) are photo-realistic and that combined with the next-level 3D makes the viewer feel as though they can simply reach out and touch it.
Alita: Battle Angel follows the titular character Alita (Salazar) who awakens in a future world she does not recognise, with no memory of who she is. Taken in by Ido (Christoph Waltz) a compassionate doctor who sees that somewhere with the abandoned cyborg shell is the soul and heart of a young woman with an incredible past.
As she begins to learn how to navigate her new life, and the dangerous streets of Iron City, Ido tries to shield her from the mysterious history she cannot remember, while her new-found street-smart friend Hugo (Johnson) offers to help her trigger her memories instead.
However, it’s only when the corrupt, deadly forces that run the city come after Alita that she is given a clue to her past – in the form of unique fighting abilities.
Alita: Battle Angel is set for release on December 21st in the US, and December 26th in the UK.
