Disney reboot DuckTales made a couple of very exciting announcements about the series, including an impressive addition to the cast, and some familiar birds who are set to make an appearance.
First of all, we must talk about the most surprising announcement of the SDCC panel, which was that the series will see one famous Don lend his voice to another. Yes, Infinity War star (and Academy Award nominee) Don Cheadle will be guest-starring in the upcoming hour-long finale of the series – voicing Donald Duck.
The episode will see Donald use an inventive voicebox which (for once) gives him an intelligible voice – and the voice of Cheadle, at that.
“It’s an awesome opportunity because there are only so many roles that you look forward to playing as an actor,” Cheadle explained in a statement, “You’ve got to do your homework and bring your A-game when you’re trying to voice Donald Duck.”
DuckTales shared a sneak peek of the episode, which hilariously sees Cheadle billed as “actor, Thanos survivor, and voice of Donald Duck.”
In the clip, Cheadle reveals some of the preparation he did for the role, including refusing to wear pants, and eating buckets of duck for a whole month to ensure that his performance would be infused with the very essence of duck.
Cheadle states, “Really, [it’s about] trying to find the id, trying to find the centre of the duck. What makes a duck tick? What does a duck want? What will a duck sacrifice for what he wants? And these are questions that people have been pondering for many, many centuries. I’m not the first person to go into duck philosophy, obviously.”
The season finale will see the return of Fenton Crackshell-Cabrera (Lin-Manuel Miranda), Magica De Spell (Catherine Tate) and Lena (Kimiko Glenn) as the family race to rescue Scrooge (David Tennant) from Magica.
As well as Cheadle’s guest appearance, the DuckTales panel also revealed that some fan-favourites would be coming to the Disney series – The Three Caballeros.
The 1944 film of the same name saw Donald Duck (during a visit to Latin America) team up with parrot José, and rooster Panchito, who became known as The Three Caballeros – one of Disney’s most memorable and woefully underused groups.
The Caballeros will show up in the second season, giving fans something special to look forward to, Bernardo de Paula will voice José, Arturo del Puerto will voice Panchito, and of course, Tony Anselmo will continue to voice Donald.
The DuckTales finale will air on the Disney Channel and DisneyNOW on August 18th.
