Former DC Creative Officer, Geoff Johns, is set to team up with Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter to pen and produce a new Stargirl series for the DC Universe streaming service.
Stargirl will be the sixth series on the digital subscription service, and the fourth live-action offering. Premiering in 2019, the 13-episode reimagining of teen superhero Courtney Whitmore will be produced by Warner Bros. TV, Johns’ Mad Ghost Productions, and Berlanti Productions.
Johns spoke to Deadline about the series, “Obviously, Stargirl was the first character I created for DC. Most important, Courtney Whitmore was inspired by my sister who passed away. To have an opportunity to tell a story celebrating this superhero was literally the first thing I wanted to do because it is so personal to me. Also, a character that speaks to being young, to a legacy and to pushing forward seems so important to me nowadays.”
In the new series, high school student Whitmore joins with the Justice Society of America to fight past and present villains.
Stargirl joins Doom Patrol and Titans as live-action projects that Johns is producing with Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter for DC Universe.
