This week thirteenth Doctor Jodie Whittaker made her first appearance at San Diego Comic Con, and while the Doctor Who panel couldn’t reveal much about the upcoming season, they did release a new look at Whittaker and friends in action.

Besides a glimpse of the latest sonic screwdriver, there were few other teases in the short trailer, that sees Whittaker’s Doctor and new companions Graham (Bradley Walsh), Yaz (Mandip Gill) and Ryan (Tosin Cole) in a bleak landscape of wreckage and a vaguely Old West-style small town.

The cast, showrunner Chris Chibnall and EP Matt Strevens came out on Hall H’s stage to riotous applause. And though no one was allowed to reveal much of anything, Mandip Gill offered her opinion on the relationship between the trio of companions, saying “The relationship between the three is beautiful” and will evolve over the new season’s ten episodes.

However, Chibnall encouraged fans not to feel discouraged, “Secrecy is not an end to itself. We have things you are not going to want to spoiled.”

The introduction of a female Doctor was very much at the centre of the panel, which began with a video of Whittaker travelling from the series’ studio in Wales to San Diego, and walking into the venue in disguise. This was followed by a video of fans from around the world in the moment they learned a woman would finally be playing the role that has previously only been played by men.

Chibnall later added to the audience, “We need a pillar of hope in these times. That pillar of hope is Jodie Whittaker as the Doctor. This Doctor treats everything with a sense of awe, wonder and respect.”

Doctor Who returns later this year.
