Warner Bros. brought their Hall H panel to a close by showing fans the thing they had been waiting patiently for since it began – the trailer for James Wan’s Aquaman.

Far from the DC Comics hero who, let’s be honest, was no one’s favourite character, Jason Momoa’s Aquaman dives deeper than ever, as this trailer shows.

The SDCC panel saw stars Momoa, Amber Heard, Patrick Wilson, Nicole Kidman and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II take the stage alongside director James Wan to discuss the highly-anticipated DC film.

Wan began the panel by explaining, “One of the biggest things I wanted to do was create a superhero film we haven’t seen before. Ours’ a little different and unique, my movie is more like a sci-fi film than a traditional superhero movie.”

The cast shared some amusing stories from their time on set, about being chafed by harnesses and the inevitable soggy situations that are guaranteed when you sign up for a film with ‘aqua’ in the title.

Abdul-Mateen, for his part, shared a story about learning how to swim – which he didn’t know how to do, despite previously appearing in the Baywatch reboot:

“I actually secretly taught myself how to swim, buying goggles and a kickboard and doing it every morning in the hotel pool. And I didn’t ever have to swim.”

Kidman, who plays Aquaman’s mother and queen of Atlantis, Atlanna, in her first SDCC appearance, revealed a far different experience:

“My opening scene I had to lie on a rock, with massive waves crashing over me. I told James, the bigger the better, give it to me, that’s why I’m doing this movie.”

The footage we see in the trailer seems to have struck a good balance between VFX and humour, which is something which DC has often struggled to achieve.

Aquaman hits cinemas on December 14th in the UK, and December 21st in the US.
