Matt Groening is turning to the past for laughs, with Disenchantment, the first new series from the creator since Futurama. During a panel for the show at SDCC, Groening shared the first full trailer for this fairy tale with a difference.
Set in the medieval kingdom of Dreamland, Disenchantment revolves around alcoholic princess, Bean (Abbi Jacobson), her Bart Simpson-esque elf friend Elfo (Nat Faxon), and her literal personal demon Luci (Eric Andre) who find themselves facing ogres, harpies, sprites, imps and humans together.
The trailer shows us that Bean, not thrilled to be marrying as per her father, the King’s (John DiMaggio) orders, opts instead to run away and find herself.
Jacobson recently told EW that not only is the show relevant, but she likes the fact it doesn’t play out like your average fantasy story, “I really like the fact that she’s an anti-stereotypical princess. It’s so not what a usual princess story is — not that there’s anything wrong with that. But it’s a really strong female character, which I’m obviously excited to play.”
Disenchantment arrives on Netflix on August 17th.
