A new report has revealed that the frontrunners to be cast as superhero Shazam, are actors Joshua Sasse (No Tomorrow) and John Cena (Trainwreck).

Lights Out director David F. Sandberg has confirmed that pre-production on Shazam is now underway – principle photography is scheduled to start in early 2018, to make a spring 2019 release date. The most recent draft of a script for the DCEU movie has been completed by Earth to Echo’s Henry Gayden and the search is now underway for actors to play the titular hero and the young boy, Billy Batson, who turns into him upon saying the word “Shazam!

Many actors, such as Smallville’s Alan Ritchson, have thrown their hat into the ring to star in Shazam, however Sasse and Cena are the first real candidates for the job. Should Cena land the role, it could lead to an eventual showdown for between him and fellow WWE alum Dwayne Johnson, who will be playing DC’s Black Adam. The synopsis for Sandberg’s adaptation suggests the movie will largely be faithful to the Shazam comic book canon, and is poised to be the next DCEU film to enter production. The working synopsis is as follows:

“Based on the DC Comics character “Shazam!” Billy Batson becomes Captain Marvel, the world’s mightiest mortal, when he says the magic word “Shazam! The name is an acronym for six gods and heroes of the ancient world as well as their attributes. The wisdom of Solomon, strength of Hercules, stamina of Atlas, power of Zeus, courage of Achilles and speed of Mercury.”

We have also been provided with more of a breakdown for character Billy Batson – describing the boy as a 12-15 year old “granted access to incredible powers by the wizard Shazam [when] he speaks the wizard’s name and is struck by a lightning bolt that gives him the powers of the gods.”

The nature of the Shazam character will blend action and light-hearted comedy, making it one of the most comedic DCEU offerings to date, and would prove valuable respite from the upcoming straight-faced instalments such as Zack Snyder’s Justice League and James Wan’s Aquaman in December 2018.

Hopefully we will have some confirmation about the details of Shazam before either of those movies open in theatres.
