Production is now underway on Warner BrosShazam!, and now we have an official synopsis for the 2019 superhero movie.

Starring Asher Angel as Billy Batson, and Zachary Levi as his alter-ego Shazam, the film comes from Lights Out director David F. Sandberg, and screenwriters Darren Lemke (Goosebumps) and Henry Gayden (Earth to Echo).

Shazam! has been in production for four years, as the first film announced alongside the main DCEU films in 2014. However, Warner Bros. have taken their time with the project, putting their more well-known heroes to the forefront of their slate. And now Aquaman is in post-production, Shazam! is the latest DC film to enter production.

While fans of the comicbook have had a general idea of what the film will bring, the official synopsis expands on that and confirms the film’s main antagonist.

As filming has officially begun today, Warner Bros. has released the film’s synopsis, confirming that Dr. Thaddeus Sivana (Mark Strong) as the main villain, and Billy will be 14 years old, and not 10 as he’s usually depicted.

The synopsis reads:

“We all have a superhero inside us, it just takes a bit of magic to bring it out. In Billy Batson’s (Angel) case, by shouting out one word—SHAZAM!—this streetwise 14-year-old foster kid can turn into the adult Super Hero Shazam (Levi), courtesy of an ancient wizard. Still a kid at heart—inside a ripped, godlike body—Shazam revels in this adult version of himself by doing what any teen would do with superpowers: have fun with them! Can he fly? Does he have X-ray vision? Can he shoot lightning out of his hands? Can he skip his social studies test? Shazam sets out to test the limits of his abilities with the joyful recklessness of a child. But he’ll need to master these powers quickly in order to fight the deadly forces of evil controlled by Dr. Thaddeus Sivana (Strong).”

Alongside the synopsis, Warner Bros. have also confirmed the movie’s central cast, as well as who they’re playing. Jack Dylan Grazer is playing Billy’s best friend, Freddy, who’s also part of Billy’s foster family. The rest of the family include Billy’s sister, Mary (Grace Fulton), Darla (Faithe Herman), Eugene (Ian Chen), and Pedro (Jovan Armand).

Playing foster parents Victor and Rosa Vasquez, are The Walking Dead’s Cooper Andrews and No Tomorrow’s Marta Millans, respectively. Futhermore, Ron Cephas Jones will play the Wizard, but it’s unclear as to whether he will be referred to as Shazam in the film.

The studio has also revealed that Shazam! will be executive produced by Dwayne Johnson, who is slated to play Shazam’s archnemesis, Teth Adam, in an upcoming Black Adam solo feature. However, just because Johnson is working on Shazam! doesn’t mean that he will appear in the film – but it also doesn’t rule out a cameo.

Shazam! is slated for release on April 5th, 2019.
