In a pre-SDCC exclusive for Entertainment Weekly, Shazam! star Zachary Levi spills on his new comic book venture.

Every kid’s wildest dream is brought to life when 14-year-old Billy Batson (Asher Angel) discovers that he can transform into an adult superhero with an array of powers by uttering a single word – Shazam! – and then return to his regular self whenever he wants.

“It’s complete wish-fulfilment — if you scour all of DC and Marvel there are very few characters that are actually stoked to be a superhero,” Zachary Levi told EW, “They’re not brooding, they’re not put out, like ‘Oh dammit, I gotta save the world again!’ Billy Batson is like Peter Parker, they’re thrilled to have these powers and can’t wait to try them out.”

After the release of recent DC titles like Batman v Superman and Justice League, it seems that 2019’s Shazam! is looking to inject some energy into the movie universe that’s famed for taking itself way too seriously – and let’s face it, even the exclamation mark in the title is already making this film more enjoyable than BvS.

Producer Peter Safran explained, “From my perspective, Shazam! represents the next step in the evolution of the DC brand. You had Wonder Woman, then Aquaman is another big step, then comes Shazam! — all different movies, but all have a unique tone that moves away from the darkness of the prior DC movies.”

With SDCC taking place this week, and the promise of a trailer being shown, we might get to know a little more about what we can expect from Shazam! soon.
