The first trailer for DC’s Shazam! delighted fans at last week’s San Diego Comic Con, but in focusing on their hero, we only got a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it look at the film’s villain Dr. Thaddeus Sivana.
Played by Kingsman actor Mark Strong, we got a brief look at the villain at around the 2:22 mark in the trailer, but otherwise, the video focuses, quite rightly on the teen-turned-hero Billy Batson (played first by Asher Angel, then by Zachary Levi).
EW has now learned a little about Strong’s villain. Billy Batson receives his powers from a 3000-year-old Wizard due to his pure heart, and the film’s version of Sivana also encountered this Wizard as a child, but he was rejected from receiving the powers. Since that time, Sivana spent his life searching for a way to gain the powers in order to live up to the expectations of his domineering father.
Director David F. Sandberg was cryptic, but did say “Mark Strong loves being a bad guy. And it’s not just him, really, it’s … something else … that lent him his powers … he can do some things that Shazam can’t. The danger in some films is the bad guy has the same powers as the good guy. [Sivana] has an extra thing, extra dynamic, that takes care of that….”
Shazam! is set for release on April 5th, 2019.
