It’s been a while since we last saw Robert Downey Jr. suit up as someone other Iron Man, but it’s been announced that the actor will reunite with Jude Law for a third Sherlock Holmes film.

Warner Bros. has officially announced that Downey Jr. and Law will return for Sherlock Holmes 3, set to open on Christmas 2020. It’s been seven years since the two hit the screens as Holmes and Watson, in the Guy Ritchie sequel, Game of Shadows. While there’s no detail on the plot as yet, a third film has been in the works for some time.

Various writers have tried to put their own stamp on the screenplay, including Rogue One’s Gary Whitta, and Guardians of the Galaxy’s Nicole Perlman back in 2016, however Deadline has reported that the studio is now working with a script from Hannibal writer and Narcos co-creator Chris Brancato. It’s unclear whether Ritchie will return to direct the third film, but the original producers, Susan Downey, Joel Silver, and Lionel Wigram are back.

However, it seems that Sherlock Holmes 3 will be dealing with some serious competition, as James Cameron’s Avatar 2 and an untitled Disney film (which could well be a new Star Wars project) are also opening at this time.

Sherlock Holmes 3 currently has a release date of December 25th, 2020.
