Miles Morales will be back.
After a long time waiting for news, Sony has finally announced a 2022 release date for the sequel to their Oscar-winning animation, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.
The original Columbia Pictures/Marvel film from Sony Pictures Animation was released in December 2018, grossed $190 million domestically and $375 million globally, with the unique take on one of Marvel’s biggest superheroes even going on to win the Animated Feature Oscar.
Into the Spider-Verse producers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller are back to produce the sequel, after the first film, which was made on a $90 million budget, was hailed as a fresh, bold and unique approach to animation, thanks to its comic book-style artwork that evoked the original spirit of the Spider-Man comics.
Miller was the one to reveal the news of the sequel on Twitter:
There’s no news on a story as yet, but it’s safe to assume that Miles Morales (Shamiek Moore) will be at the centre, possibly joined once more by his Spider-Verse compatriots Peter B. Parker (Jake Johnson), Spider-Gwen (Hailee Steinfeld), Spider-Man Noir (Nicolas Cage), Peni Parker (Kimiko Glenn) and maybe even Spider-Ham (Jon Mulaney).
The Into the Spider-Verse sequel is set for release on April 8th, 2022.
