The first reactions to Rian Johnson’s Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi are now online, following the world premiere in LA – and they’re very complimentary.
The highly-anticipated sequel continues the story that was previously established in J.J. Abrams’ Episode VII – The Force Awakens, and takes the franchise in new and exciting directions, while also laying the groundwork for Abrams to round off the trilogy in Episode IX.
There isn’t a lot that’s known about this film, however Episode VIII has been different from the start, with Lucasfilm promising many tantalising twists within the story, that have been kept entirely under wraps. What is known, is that The Last Jedi picks up just moments after the end of The Force Awakens, with Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) speaking for the first time since 1983’s Return of the Jedi.
Since the LA premiere, social media reactions have been flooding online, with critics saying that Johnson’s film is an emotional (and jaw-dropping) sequel that lives up to the hype.
Take a look at some of the best – SPOILER-FREE – reactions below:

#StarWarsTheLastJedi floored me. @rianjohnson and the team nail so much – thrills, laughs, heart and most of all, pushing the characters/overall franchise a major step forward. Some really rich material to explore in the future. Can't wait for more.

Impressed with #StarWars: #TheLastJedi. It makes some big, impressive and surprising moves that I definitely didn't expect. Not all of the plot stuff is exactly perfect, but the character work is once again fantastic, and it's just amazing to see Luke Skywalker back in action.

There’s a scene in #StarWars #TheLastJedi that I keep playing over and over in my head, that is so stunning and unexpected that I don’t want to forget how I felt seeing it for the first time. This movie feels unlike any other Star Wars movie in all the ways I hoped. pic.twitter.com/zlDW4yOjp2

The Last Jedi comes in at 2 hours, 31 minutes, making it the longest Star Wars movie ever, as Johnson wanted the sharpest film he could make. Unfortunately, with the passing of Carrie Fisher last year, The Last Jedi will now be her last Star Wars film, meaning Johnson had to get creative when editing in order to conclude Leia’s story arc.
Lucasfilm’s confidence in Johnson speaks for itself, as his work on The Last Jedi has afforded him the opportunity to create an entirely separate Star Wars trilogy, unconnected to the Skywalker saga. No one has had this much freedom with the franchise since George Lucas himself, so clearly Johnson’s Episode VIII must be something very special.
