Just when you thought Hollywood had exhausted the shark theme – because we’re up to 5 Sharknado films – here comes a film that throws together a pairing you never knew you wanted. A Jason Statham shark movie.
The Meg sees Statham play a deep-sea diver who comes face-to-face with a gigantic prehistoric shark (the Megalodon, or Meg) whose 75-foot size puts Spielberg’s beasty to shame. Fear not, however, as The Meg also includes many of the Statham tropes we’ve come to know, like machine gun fire, explosions and screaming.
From the director of National Treasure and Cool Runnings, Jon Turtletaub, this shark thriller actually looks fairly funny, as they clearly aren’t taking this story too seriously. The addition of Riann Wilson, whose one-liners are hilarious, as well as the accompanying track of Bobby Darin’s “Beyond the Sea” certainly make this trailer a lot of fun.
The full synopsis of The Meg has also been released:
“A deep-sea submersible—part of an international undersea observation program—has been attacked by a massive creature, previously thought to be extinct, and now lies disabled at the bottom of the deepest trench in the Pacific…with its crew trapped inside. With time running out, expert deep sea rescue diver Jonas Taylor (Jason Statham) is recruited by a visionary Chinese oceanographer (Winston Chao), against the wishes of his daughter Suyin (Li Bingbing), to save the crew—and the ocean itself—from this unstoppable threat: a pre-historic 75-foot-long shark known as the Megalodon. What no one could have imagined is that, years before, Taylor had encountered this same terrifying creature. Now, teamed with Suyin, he must confront his fears and risk his own life to save everyone trapped below.”
The Meg is heading for cinemas on August 10th.
