The CW are filling up their schedule
After handing early renewals to all 13 of its current scripted series, The CW has given series pickups to both Superman & Lois, starring Tyler Hoechlin and Elizabeth Tulloch in their Arrowverse roles, and Walker, a reboot of Walker, Texas Ranger starring Supernatural’s Jared Padalecki.
With several of their DC series reaching maturity, and the one that started it all, Arrow, wrapping up its final season, the network is ramping up its DC development with two high-profile projects. First, Superman & Lois, which will see Hoechlin and Tulloch play the titular characters dealing with their new role of working parents. The second is the Arrow backdoor spinoff, Green Arrow and the Canaries, headlined by Katherine McNamara, Katie Cassidy and Juliana Harkavy reprising their roles from the parent show.
It’s currently unclear how the pickup of Superman & Lois will affect the ither Arrowverse pilot’s chances, but Deadline have heard that the network may go with only one new DC series for next year, but the final decision will be made after their executives have reviewed all the pilots.
Both Superman & Lois and Walker have been hot scripts generating early buzz, based on well-known IP, with popular stars attached and a proven team behind them – The Flash EP Todd Helbing and Greg Berlanti for Superman & Lois, Anna Fricke and Dan Lin for Walker – making their series orders no surprise.
Walker sees Padalecki continue his more than twenty-year relationship with The CW, and like the original series it will explore themes of family, morality, and discovering common ground. It centres around Cordell Walker (Padalecki), a widower and father of two with a moral code entirely of his own who returns home to Austin after having been undercover for two years, only to discover that there’s far harder work to be done at home.
The series will see him try to reconnect with his children, navigate clashes with his more conservative family, and find common ground with his new partner, one of the first women in Texas Rangers’ history – all while growing more suspicious of the circumstances around his wife’s death.
