Taika Waititi has shared the first picture from his new dark comedy, Jojo Rabbit, in which the actor/director is dressed as Adolf Hitler.
The film follows Jojo (Roman Griffin Davis), a young boy in Nazi Germany who dreams of joining Hitler’s ranks, and conjures the dictator as an imaginary friend, before discovering that his mother (Scarlett Johansson) has been hiding a Jew in their house.
The director spoke to The Wrap about his role as Hitler, calling it his “version of…a lonely boy’s best version of his hero, which is really his dad” and according to the character’s description, this version of the Nazi leader “glides through life with a childlike naivety” which makes sense, given he is being conjured up by the imagination of a young boy.
As well as Waititi and Johansson, the film also stars Oscar-winner Sam Rockwell as Nazi Captain Klenzendorf, and Pitch Perfect star Rebel Wilson as Fraulein Rahm.
Waititi had previously teased his role, by tweeting a picture of himself next to a picture of Hitler, with the caption “what better way to insult Hitler than having him portrayed by a Polynesian Jew?”
Jojo Rabbit currently has no release date.
