Since cutting ties with The Weinstein Company, following the sexual harassment scandal, Tarantino has been shopping around his untitled Manson family drama. And while we don’t know the title or anything about the plot, or well, anyone who’s in it – we do know that it centres around infamous American serial killer, Charles Manson. Sort of.
“It’s not Charles Manson, it’s 1969,” Tarantino told Indiewire, at a post-screening event honouring Sofia Coppola and her new film, The Beguiled. This is supposed to mean that the plot of this film is about Manson, as much as the plot of Inglorious Basterds is about Hitler – they’re more about the worlds in which these people thrived/controlled.
Tarantino said that he has just finished a round of pitch meetings with five studios with worldwide distribution seeking to finance this movie. Margot Robbie is rumoured to be playing Sharon Tate in the project, and the director is also said to have Brad Pitt, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Samuel L. Jackson on retainer.
As to which studio is going to bag the movie, Tarantino says “It’s a level playing field” and he doesn’t know for sure yet. He’s also revealed that he will be ready to work on the movie in January, after working a little more on the script – and getting married. The director cut ties with The Weinstein Company, which has financed all of his films since Reservoir Dogs in 1992, after the sexual harassment as assault allegations against Harvey Weinstein.
