Matt Reeves’ The Batman has found its Selina Kyle/Catwoman in the form of Big Little Lies star Zoë Kravitz.
Kravitz joins Robert Pattinson in the title role of Bruce Wayne/Batman, Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner Gordon and possibly Jonah Hill, who is in talks to take on the role of one of the film’s villains, rumoured to be The Riddler.
Reeves confirmed the casting on Twitter, with a gif, just as he did when Pattinson landed the lead:
The actress, and daughter of musical legend Lenny Kravitz is the eighth to take on the role of Catwoman (physically anyway) following in the footsteps of Eartha Kitt, Lee Meriwether, Julie Newmar, Michelle Pfeiffer, Halle Berry, Anne Hathaway, and most recently Cameron Bicondova, who played a younger version of the character in the TV series Gotham.
The character made her first appearance in print as “The Cat” in 1940’s Batman #1 and since then Selina Kyle has come to be a very important part of Bruce Wayne’s story. Catwoman has a complex love-hate relationship with the Dark Knight, with the duo recently planning to marry in 2018’s Batman #50. However, much like many of their past encounters, it didn’t go as planned.
Kravitz has proved many times over that she can deliver a great performance, and while a role of this kind carries with it certain expectations from fans, I’m eager to see what she will bring to the character.
