One report claims this is the case
The Walking Dead will reportedly end with a twelfth season, following the surprise ending of the source material earlier this year.
The popular zombie drama is currently partway through Season 10, however sources close to the show have claimed that it will end with Season 12 in March 2022.
We Got This Covered has claimed that Scott Gimple, who oversees the franchise, will focus on spin-off series Fear the Walking Dead, which is currently on its sixth season. A second spin-off, focusing on a group of teens who have grown up in the apocalypse, will begin next year.
Last year it was announced that The Walking Dead would branch off into a trilogy of films centred on Andrew Lincoln’s Rick Grimes, who left the original show midway through Season 9. This news was followed by the announcement that Black Panther star Danai Gurira, who plays Michonne in the series, will leave next season.
The report reads, “The current thinking at AMC is to do two more seasons of The Walking Dead before bringing things to a close and focusing on the spin-offs.”
“While the show that started it all may be winding down, there’s still a lot of gas left in the tank for the property overall.”
Frankly, it’s about time, as in the opinion of many fans the series has declined over the past few seasons – and many just stopped watching after Rick Grimes’ departure – so with an end in sight, the show’s writers can focus on developing an ending befitting of such a long-running series.
