When a Time Lord regenerates, their outfit stays the same, and so when Jodie Whittaker takes over from Peter Capaldi, she’ll initially be wearing his clothes – which is how Capaldi found out that his successor was a woman – but when the Thirteenth Doctor takes her first solo steps, she’ll be rocking her own look.

Today, the BBC has released the first picture of Whittaker in her official costume, and it’s quite the departure from the previous doctors’ dark outfits. More casual than many of the outfits, they’ve gone with a retro, colourful ensemble, with the classic ‘doctor’ overcoat that all the previous doctors have had in one form or another – and a shirt that somewhat resembles the one worn by Robin WilliamsMork.

Though it will be a while before we see how the Doctor’s personality has changed with the recasting, we know that she’ll be running with Bradley Walsh, Tosin Cole, and Mandip Gill have been cast as Graham, Ryan, and Yasmin, respectively, who will presumably be joining her throughout the new season.

13 companions

Doctor Who season 11 will premiere in 2018, but Whittaker will make her debut in this year’s Christmas special on December 25th.
