The Joker director, Todd Philips has once again taken to Instagram to reveal another look at Joaquin Phoenix’s Arthur, this time in a full face of clown makeup.
Set to the theme of The Guess Who’s 1969 hit “Laughing”, the clip flickers between Phoenix’s plain-clothes Arthur, to a more sinister look at the lead character’s clown-faced alter ego:
While we don’t get a proper look at the Joker here, since the video was released, more images have surfaced of Phoenix on the film’s set, and the look Philips seems to have gone for falls neatly between Heath Ledger’s clown prince (with a particular tie to the colours of the mask he wears during the film’s opening) and the iconic ‘60s Joker as played by Cesar Romero – though clearly leans toward fan-favourite Ledger:
Hopefully, this means that Arthur will have both the levity of Romero’s iteration, and the edge that came with Ledger’s performance. However, I have a theory that this won’t be the Joker’s final look in the film, but simply the look he adopts when begins to lose control – the film may then end with Arthur done in the iconic comic image of the villain – a crisp, clean clown, ready to rock Gotham to its core.
These teases are certainly enough to whet fans’ appetites, and so far, Phoenix’s Joker is a hit amongst the DC fanbase.
The Joker is set for release on October 4th, 2019.
