To mark the first day of filming on Top Gun sequel, Top Gun: Maverick, Tom Cruise has shared the first official image from the set.
When Top Gun was released in 1986, it took the box office by storm and became so popular that enlistment in the US Navy saw a significant spike. Following Cruise’s reckless and unpredictable Lt. Pete “Maverick” Mitchell as he begins training in the Navy’s Top Gun Naval Fighter Weapons School, the film saw the character find rivalry, friendship and love as he fought his way to the top of his class.
Now, over 30 years later, work has officially begun on the sequel.
Directed by Joseph Kosinski, who directed Cruise in Oblivion, most of the details on plot and supporting cast are under wraps, but Cruise decided to give fans a treat on Twitter today, by sharing the first image from Top Gun: Maverick, seeing his character kitted out in his Navy flight suit, and holding the same helmet he wore in the original. They have even given a nod to one of the original’s most famous quotes:
