Next in the long line of prequels that no one actually asked for, but Hollywood thinks we want, is Transformers spinoff Bumblebee, which explores the origin story of the yellow Volkswagen beetle.
The first trailer for Bumblebee sees Hailee Steinfeld meet her new car, a rusty Volkswagen beetle, in a junkyard, but as the voiceover from the late Bernie Mac’s Bobby Bolivia tells us, the car picks the driver. But, when she takes it back to her shop and the Autobot transforms, she quickly learns that this is no ordinary car. However, the transformation in this film looks nothing like the one Shia LaBeouf’s character watches in the 2007 film, as the bot seems more sweet and emotional than he appears in the earlier films.
The film’s synopsis reads:
“On the run in the year 1987, Bumblebee finds refuge in a junkyard in a small Californian beach town. Charlie (Hailee Steinfeld), on the cusp of turning 18 and trying to find her place in the world, discovers Bumblebee, battle-scarred and broken. When Charlie revives him, she quickly learns this is no ordinary, yellow VW bug.”
Based on this trailer, it definitely seems as though Paramount is looking to bring new life to the Transformers franchise with Bumblebee. Aside from Steinfeld being the first female lead in the franchise, this spinoff seems to be trying to bring more warmth and emotion to the formally loud and brash films of Michael Bay. The studio recently pulled the seventh Transformers film from their release slate in order to give the series a “makeover”, so perhaps they are waiting for the response to Bumblebee before they move forward.
Bumblebee is set for release on December 21st in the US, and December 26th in the UK.
